Douglas Miller, chair of the Health Sciences Council (HSC), today announced the appointment of Dean Zaragoza to the position of Executive Director, HSC.
"My HSC board colleagues and I look forward to working with Dean to advance the goals of our new strategic plan", said Miller. "We will work closely with Dean and the staff at the HSC to create a sustainable business model for continued health sciences activities at the University of Alberta."
Dean Zaragoza played a lead role with the Alberta Transplant Applied Genomics Centre, a research centre within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and its affiliated start - up company, Transcriptome Sciences Inc. Most recently, as the Business Development Manager for the Health Sciences Council, Zaragoza was responsible for developing and managing a customer base outside the University, for the services and facilities available in Health Sciences Education and Research Commons (HSERC). Dean holds a B.Sc.
in Biological Sciences, an M.Sc. in Biochemistry and an MBA in Technology Commercialization from the University of Alberta.

"I believe we can make great strides in advancing interdisciplinary education and research at the University of Alberta by finding innovative ways to work together, not just within the University community, but through new partnerships with government and the private sector."
Reporting directly to the Chair, the Executive Director is responsible for providing senior administrative management; he will work closely with the Director, Health Sciences Education and Research Commons, Associate Director, Administration and the Communications Manager to support the initiatives of the Chair, including a broad range of interdisciplinary endeavors focused on the evolution of sustainable, safe, patient-centered health care in Canada and the world.
The University of Alberta offers a wide range of health science programs to approximately 8,000 students at the pre-licensure and graduate level.
The Council facilitates interdisciplinary learning, discovery and citizenship through leadership and collaboration across all health disciplines.
The U of A was the first university in Canada to address interdisciplinary health scholarship through a council of equals. This approach allows faculties to maintain autonomy and develop their unique disciplinary strengths while addressing challenges and opportunities common to all.
