Resume Help
Crafting a resume that captures your skills, experiences, and abilities in a way that helps you stand out from the competition — and that ensures companies understand how you fit their hiring needs — can be challenging.
Whether you are looking to create your first engineering resume, or improve an existing one, the following resources, tools, and services can help.
Engineering Career Connections Resource Vault
Review our quick tip videos, templates, and best practices for standout engineering resumes as detailed in our handouts and presentation slides under the Writing Effective Resumes section of the Resource Vault.
VMock
Take advantage of VMock — a virtual resume review tool that uses language processing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning — to provide you with customized feedback on your resume.
Current engineering students can either:
- Use VMock’s resume building tool to create a new one that aligns with best practices, or
- Upload their existing resume to see how it complies with best practices and stacks up against the relevant UAlberta benchmark.
Instructions on accessing VMock for the first time and answers to frequently asked questions about it can be found on the VMock page in the Resource Vault.
Here’s what other UAlberta engineering students have to say about VMock:
- “There was a lot of feedback and instant examples that you could see suggesting improvements that were easy to implement.”
- “It was easy to figure out and the instruction video was concise and helpful. It was very user friendly, and allowed me to spot areas that I could improve on.”
- “The feedback provided by VMock is very informative. It is easily understandable and I was able to fix the problems easily.”
University of Alberta Career Centre
To help current students and recent alumni develop effective resumes the Career Centre offers Seminars and individual Advising Appointments for Resume, CV, Cover Letter, and Application Critiques.
Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
APEGA offers a number of events and services to help prepare engineering students for the profession. If you want to feel more confident in your ability to secure a job interview with a quality resume, upload your resume for their Virtual Resume Review service. Within 2 weeks you will receive written feedback from 2-3 volunteers that are typically HR representatives or professional engineers.
