The China Institute of the University of Alberta will host its 10th annual “National Forum on Canada-China Economic Policy” virtually on September 18, 2020. The theme this year is “50 Years of Evolving Economic Relations”. This event will bring together officials with responsibility for diplomatic and trade policies, industry leaders, and leading experts on trade and investment issues.

Over half a century economic relations grew exponentially between Canada and China. In scope and in depth, the rise of Chinese investment and trade became increasingly important for the globe and for Canada. Yet the growing interconnectivity between our two economies has also created complexities and uncertainties, highlighted recently by a diplomatic standoff set off by the arrest of the Chief Financial Officer of Huawei, the subsequent detention of two Canadians, and travel and trade disruptions caused by the coronavirus outbreak. With no clear signs of easing diplomatic tensions and concerns over the slowdown of China’s growth, the Forum is an opportunity to assess the near and long term trajectory of the Chinese economy, its impact on Canadian industries, and to re-think engagement strategies going forward.
