Student Travel Grants
Travel grants of up to $1000 are available to University of Alberta full-time graduate and undergraduate students. Please submit an application form for student travel grants directly to The China Institute for consideration. For organized tours or study programs, please submit only one application for the entire group. Application is accepted throughout the year, however, application must be received at least two months before intended travel.
Initiatives considered:
- Summer Study Abroad Programs to China
- University organized travel/study tours to China. Group application by department is required.
- Travel to conferences where the student will present China-related research
- Travel to China for research related to the student's area of study
- Priority will be given to initiatives that involve some dimension of China scholarship, and/or that show linkages between China and Canada
Applications must include the following:
- Application form
- Supporting statement from Supervising Faculty Member, Chair or Director of program
- Project/Conference description (Purpose of the visit, expected outcomes and proposed budget summary)
- Acceptance letter if travel for conference
- Dates of travel
Terms of funding:
- Expenses that will be covered include:

- Return economy airfare
- Local transportation and accommodation costs
- Visa fees
- A report following the visit to be submitted to The China Institute within one month of the return travel date
- Approved applications will be processed for payment by the earliest available monthly payroll deadline as determined by The China Institute and Student Payments office
- Original travel receipts will need to be retained for a minimum of one year
- It is the responsibility of the grantee to obtain health insurance for the term of the visit
- For group proposals, funding will be given directly to the Faculty to disperse to the students
Review Process:
- Students will only be considered for one student grant per year (once every 12 months)
- Only complete applications will be considered
- The review process may take up to ten weeks
