Special Faculty Initiatives
This grant helps provide seed funding for collaborative project. Proposals for special faculty initiatives that will increase the level of understanding of China, enhance research exchanges on China studies and promote institutional linkages between the University of Alberta and China, will be considered. Please submit your proposals directly to The China Institute at china@ualberta.ca by the deadline indicated.
Sample initiatives considered:
- Conferences/ seminars with partner institutions in China, either held in Canada or China
- Missions that would help with:

- Recruitment of students from China
- Research collaboration
- Special lectures on China related topics
Applications must include the following:
*Maximum up to 4 pages
- Summary of the initiative, including expected outcomes
- Supporting statement from Department Chair or Dean
- Budget
- Funding that will come from other sources. Priority will be given to those initiatives where additional funding for the project has been secured or requested
- Funds requested from The China Institute
Terms of funding:
- A report of the project or related publication must be submitted to The China Institute
- Research related projects must be set up through the Research Services Office by the grantee
- It is the responsibility of the researcher to obtain all required ethics approval in advance for research involving human subjects and/or animals.
- Grants must be used within two fiscal years from the date the grant is received
- Financial arrangement must be made within two months of the award letter, the funds may no longer be available thereafter
- Unused funds must be returned to The China Institute
Review Process:
- All applications will be screened by The China Institute. A peer-review process will provide The China Institute with recommendations
- The review process will take up to 8-10 weeks
