Witnessing the War in Ukraine: Oral History and Interview-Based Research

The world is in the midst of the worst and greatest war in Europe since World War Two. On 24 February 2022, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched a massive and ferocious invasion of Ukraine. Fatalities and other casualties have rapidly mounted and a humanitarian catastrophe of unprecedented proportions has developed. As of May 2022, 5 million Ukrainian citizens fled the war and more than 7 million were internally displaced. In response to this unfolding humanitarian trauma of massive proportions, researchers in oral history, ethnography, and cultural anthropology have been stepping forward and engaging in active collection of evidence.  

What are the ethical implications of this ‘rapid response’ to the war? How should researchers approach fieldwork in times of continuously unfolding trauma? How do we conduct interview-based research in times of war without harming those with whom we work in the field? “War is a persistent attribute of human cultures through times” — with these words the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University opened a 5-year exhibit Arts of War (2014-2019). In Eastern Europe, we have witnessed an entire generation of ethnographers and anthropologists working through the trauma of the Balkan Wars that plagued the region throughout the 1990s. The question of how to conduct research ethically in conflict settings was also addressed in many other contexts concerning many other wars that continue to unfold around the world outside of Europe. Sadly, it is now an urgent question facing researchers of Ukraine as well.

The organizers of the Witnessing the War in Ukraine Summer Institute (WWSI), held at the Jagiellonian Univeristy in Krakow from 16-19 July 2022, offered an academic platform for a respectful and focused discussion of research needs and fieldwork challenges of interview-based research in the context of the ongoing war on Ukraine.

Activities

The work of the Summer Institute was organized as such:

  • Part One of the Institute featured presentations by established experts in the fields of oral history and related fields focusing on interview-based research in the context of war and trauma.
  • Part Two consisted of seminar and workshop sessions. In the seminars, the institute experts and participants discussed key methodological and ethical aspects of interview-based research in times of unfolding trauma. Participants were asked to work through assigned reading material in advance to engage in the discussion of the topic.  

During the workshop sessions led by Institute faculty, participants shared their own ongoing or planned projects and engaged with other participants in the discussion of their work.

Літній інститут з досліджень на основі інтерв’ю та усної історії
«Свідчення війни в Україні»

16–19 липня 2022 року - Краків, Польща

Світ зараз перебуває в розпалі найжахливішої і найбільшої війни в Європі з часів Другої світової. Збройні сили Російської Федерації 24 лютого 2022 року розпочали масштабне і жорстоке вторгнення в Україну. Кількість жертв та потерпілих стрімко зростає до рівня гуманітарної катастрофи небувалих масштабів. Станом на травень 2022 року 5 мільйонів громадян України, тікаючи від війни, покинули країну, а понад 7 мільйонів є внутрішньо переміщеними особами. У відповідь на цю все більшу гуманітарну травму масового масштабу дослідники з усної історії, етнографи, культурні антропологи активно розпочали збирання свідчень.

Які етичні наслідки цієї «швидкої реакції» на війну? Як потрібно проводити польові дослідження під час неперервно зростаючої травми? Як проводити інтерв'ю-дослідження під час війни, не завдаючи шкоди тому, з ким ми працюємо? «Війна — це постійна ознака людської культури в усі часи», — цими словами Музей археології та етнології Пібоді при Гарвардському університеті відкрив 5-річну виставку «Мистецтво війни» (2014–2019). Тільки у Східній Європі ми стали свідками формування покоління етнографів та антропологів, які працювали над травмою Балканських воєн, що мордували регіон у період 1990-х років. Питання про етичні підходи досліджень в умовах конфлікту також розглядали в багатьох інших контекстах щодо багатьох інших воєн, що тривають по всьому світу за межами Європи. На жаль, зараз це питання стає дедалі актуальнішим і для дослідників України.

В умовах війни в Україні організатори літнього інституту пропонують академічну платформу для уважного й зосередженого обговорення потреб і викликів польових досліджень і проведення інтерв'ю в контексті поточної війни в Україні.

Роботу літнього інституту організовано в такий спосіб:

  • У першій частині будуть представлені доповіді відомих експертів у галузі усної історії та суміжних напрямів, які працюють над дослідженнями, основаними на інтерв’ю в контексті війни і травм.
  • Друга частина буде містити семінари й воркшопи. На семінарах експерти та учасники інституту обговорять ключові методологічні й етичні аспекти інтерв'ю-досліджень під час розвитку травми. Учасникам буде запропоновано заздалегідь попрацювати над вибраними публікаціями задля кращого обговорення теми.

Під час воркшопів учасники під керівництвом викладачів інституту поділяться своїми поточними чи запланованими проєктами та візьмуть участь в обговоренні власної роботи з іншими учасниками.
