David R. Marples appointed as CIUS Research Fellow

The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta is pleased to announce the year-long appointment of David R. Marples as a CIUS Research Fellow under the institute’s Contemporary Ukraine Studies Program.

Dr. Marples is a Distinguished University Professor and chair of UAlberta’s Department of History, Classics, and Religion. He holds a PhD in Economic and Social History from the University of Sheffield (1985) and has worked at the University of Alberta since 1991. He is an associate editor of Nationalities Papers and Canadian Slavonic Papers and serves on the editorial boards of several other, mainly European journals. Dr. Marples has authored sixteen monographs and four edited books on topics ranging from 20th-century Russia and Stalinism to contemporary Belarus, contemporary Ukraine, and the Chernobyl disaster. His recent books include War in Ukraine’s Donbas: Origins, Contexts, and the Future (as editor; 2022), Understanding Ukraine and Belarus (2020), ‘Our Glorious Past’: Lukashenka’s Belarus and the Great Patriotic War (2014), Russia in the 20th Century: The Quest for Stability  (2011), Heroes and Villains: Creating National History in Contemporary Ukraine (2008), and The Collapse of the Soviet Union, 1985–1991 (2004). 

Dr. Marples has served as a consultant on current affairs in Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia to a wide array of national and international government and nongovernmental organizations. He was formerly the director of CIUS’s Stasiuk Program on Contemporary Ukraine (2004–14).
