Kolasky Distinguished Visiting Fellowship for the Study of Contemporary Ukraine 2022-2023

The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta, invites applications for the inaugural Kolasky Distinguished Visiting Fellowship for the Study of Contemporary Ukraine. The fellowship will be offered in 2022-2023 for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, subject to review. Research proposals should be within the political science discipline. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in global security, international relations, and peace studies.

The successful applicant will take up the appointment at CIUS from 1 September 2022 and will be co-hosted by the University of Alberta’s Department of Political Science. In addition to working on a research project, the Kolasky Distinguished Visiting Fellow will be expected to assist with, contribute to, and participate in the activities and work of CIUS, while engaging with the university beyond the institute and with the general public.

The Kolasky Distinguished Visiting Fellow will especially participate in the ongoing projects of the Contemporary Ukraine Studies Program at CIUS; maintain an active scholarly presence on campus beyond the institute and facilitate cooperation with scholars and graduate students in Ukraine and elsewhere; assist with the organization of conferences and other fora; deliver formal lectures at the university (co-hosted by CIUS and the Department of Political Science) and at a public venue; and engage in outreach activities (publicity, interviews, fundraising, writing of journalistic pieces, etc.) on behalf of the institute.

The annual stipend is C$55,000.00. In addition to the stipend, the award includes economy airfare to and from Edmonton and supplemental health benefits. An additional C$2,000 is available for research-related expenses. Recipients of the Kolasky Distinguished Fellowship may not hold another fellowship concurrently.

Applicants must be citizens of Ukraine and current residents of that country. All scholars, senior as well as recent recipients of doctorates, are eligible to apply. In addition to holding a doctorate or a Candidate of Sciences (Kandydat nauk) degree, fluency in English is a requirement. The Kolasky Distinguished Visiting Fellowship for the Study of Contemporary Ukraine is made possible by funding from the John Kolasky Memorial Endowment Fund.
