A primary aim of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies is to foster, develop, and support Ukrainian studies in Canada and internationally. This is done in part by offering or administering postdoctoral fellowships, graduate fellowships (to master's and doctoral students), and scholarships to undergraduate students. Grants are also awarded to established scholars to support research work that would lead to publications or dissemination of results in other forms.

Research Grants in Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Canadian Studies in the Humanities and Social sciences, Law, Education, and Library Sciences 2019-2020

The Remeza Family Research and Publications Grant 2019-2020
Awarded annually to support research and publications pertaining to the work and legacy of Bohdan Lepky and the general areas of his intellectual and creative interests. This may include works on language, literature, history, education, and culture that reflect the Lepky era.

The Teodota and Ivan Klym Grants in Ukrainian Studies 2019-2020
The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies is accepting proposals from students and scholars from universities in Ukraine (particularly Chernivtsi National University) for junior and senior research grants, fellowships, scholarly publications, and conferences.

Visiting Research and Post-Doctoral Fellowships
The Kolasky Visiting Research Fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences, Law, Education, and Library Sciences 2019-2020
The institute invites applications from senior graduate students seeking a «Candidate of Sciences» degree and mature scholars who are citizens of Ukraine to conduct research or independent study as visiting research fellows in a Canadian university or any other scholarly institution in Canada. The fellowship is C$2,500-3,000 monthly for 2 or more months.
Depending on the location in Canada, communication and some or all of the work undertaken by Kolasky fellows will be conducted in either or both of the official languages, English or French. Fellowship candidates, therefore, are expected to possess a matching level of language proficiency.

Bayduza Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship for the Study of Modern and Contemporary Ukraine 2019-2020
A Bayduza Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences will be offered in 2019-2020 by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies to support the study of modern and contemporary Ukraine. The fellowship is for one year (with the possibility of renewal, subject to review). Although all applications in fields associated with the humanities and social sciences will be considered, research proposals in the areas of identities, nationalism, regions, borders, social values, historical politics and memory, change, and conflict, will be given preference.
To qualify, applicants must have received a PhD (or Candidate of Sciences degree from Ukraine or another post-Soviet country) within the past four years at the time of application. Applicants who are scheduled to receive their degree by the end of June 2019 are also eligible to apply, if they submit confirmatory documents. The successful applicant will be expected to take up the post-doctoral appointment at CIUS from 1 September 2019, but no later than 30 September 2019. In addition to working on a research project, the Bayduza Research Fellow will be expected to assist and participate in the overall program planning and activities of CIUS.
This competition is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and foreign nationals. The annual stipend is C$38,000. In addition to the stipend, the award includes economy airfare to and from Edmonton, and supplemental health benefits. An additional C$2,000 is available for research-related expenses. Recipients of the Bayduza Fellowship may not hold another fellowship concurrently.

Scholarships, Fellowships and other Awards for Students
Undergraduate
Leo J. Krysa Family Undergraduate Scholarship in Education, History, Humanities and Social Sciences 2019-2020
The Krysa Undergraduate Scholarship (up to C$3,500), non-renewable, is awarded annually to a student in the Faculty of Arts or Faculty of Education about to enter the final year of study in pursuit of an undergraduate degree. The applicant's programs must emphasize Ukrainian and/or Ukrainian-Canadian studies, through a combination of Ukrainian and East European or Canadian courses in one of the above areas.
The scholarship is for an eight-month period of study at any Canadian university. Candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada at the time of application.

The Ivan Franko School of Ukrainian Studies (IFSUS) Ukraine Travel Award (C$2,000) is granted to students who have completed at least one year of study at the post-secondary level and who have also completed Ukrainian 30 or equivalent. Applicants are required to enroll in a Ukrainian studies course/program to be offered in Ukraine by an accredited post-secondary institution, or to take courses for one semester or more at a post-secondary institution in Ukraine. Selection is based on overall academic achievement, performance in Ukrainian courses, a one-page essay on the benefit of the course/program to be taken in Ukraine. Involvement in the Ukrainian community is an asset. IFSUS graduates and Alberta residents are given preference. A minimum of two awards are offered annually.
The IFSUS is Edmonton's oldest Ukrainian language school. It was established in 1956 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006. Its program provides Saturday morning classes for high school students seeking additional exposure to Ukrainian history, literature, geography, culture, and language. The school is accredited by Alberta Education and grants high school credits in Ukrainian 10, 20, and 30.

Graduate and Postgraduate
Helen Darcovich Memorial Doctoral Fellowship in Education, History, Humanities, Social Sciences, Law and Library Sciences 2019-2020
The Darcovich Memorial Doctoral Fellowship (up to C$12,500), is awarded annually to a student writing a dissertation on a Ukrainian or Ukrainian-Canadian topic in one of the above areas. Because funding is for dissertation work only, all other degree requirements must be completed by the time the award is taken up. Fellowship holders may apply for a one-year renewal.
Applications will be judged on a points system based on the dissertation proposal, letters of reference, writing sample, academic grades, and publishing record. Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada, who may hold the fellowship at any institution of higher learning, and foreign students enrolled at the University of Alberta, will receive extra points.

Celestin and Irena Suchowersky Graduate Fellowship In Sociology, Psychology, Economics, or Ukrainian Studies 2019-2020 The fellowship is offered to graduate students from the Bukovyna region of Ukraine (Chernivtsi oblast) to conduct research at a Canadian university in support of their studies in the disciplines of Sociology, Psychology, Economics, or in Ukrainian Studies. The fellowship can be held for a period of two months to a maximum of four months. Fellowship holders receive C$2,000 per month, paid economy airfare to and from Canada, and traveler's medical insurance. To qualify, applicants must be from the Bukovyna region of Ukraine and enrolled in a Master's or PhD (or Candidate of Sciences) graduate program in Ukraine. Deadline: 1 March 2019
Neporany Doctoral Fellowship 2019-2020
The Neporany Doctoral Fellowship, offered by the Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies (Osyp and Josaphat Neporany Educational Fund), will be awarded in 2019-2020 to one or more doctoral students specializing on Ukraine in political science, economics, and related fields (social sciences and political, economic and social history). Preference will be given to students completing their dissertations as well as to students at Canadian universities or Canadian citizens and residents.
The amount of the award can range from C$5,000 to C$20,000. The Neporany Fellowship may be held in conjunction with other awards but will be withdrawn or reduced if the total amount awarded, including this fellowship, exceeds C$30,000.
The duration of the fellowship will be one academic year.
