"The Unpredictable Past": Revisiting European, Russian, and Ukrainian Historical Studies

Thursday, 11 May 2023 | 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Lister Conference Centre, Prairie Room

University of Alberta | 87 Ave & 116 St, Edmonton

Gathering esteemed scholars in Ukrainian studies, this panel will examine institutional and intellectual transformations that have occurred in Ukrainian studies since Russia's physical war against Ukraine began in 2014. It will capture a “screenshot” of the state of the art in the field of Ukrainian studies, focusing mainly on history and history-related disciplines. The panelists' discussion will revolve around the following broad questions:
(1) How has Russia's invasion of Ukraine challenged Western disciplines “responsible” for the production and dissemination of expert knowledge on the lands and peoples at the eastern edge of Europe?
(2) What are the blind spots and controversial topics in the national historical narratives of Ukraine and its European neighbors? How should they be re-interpreted, re-presented, or replaced in textbooks, teaching courses, and encyclopaedias?
(3) How must  the usage of historical terminology be improved in order to avoid misinterpretation and properly reflect the many facets of Rus' historical legacy during its ongoing transformation?

This is an in-person event, open to the public, that will also be live-streamed on CIUS's YouTube channel.
