Dr. Nirupan Vipulananthan
Teaching excellence is at the heart of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. As part of this vision, each year, our residents carefully consider and vote for the preceptor they believe is most deserving of the ‘Teacher of the Year Award’.
This year, the Department would like to congratulate Dr. Nirupan Vipulananthan for being recognized for this achievement. The residents applauded Dr Vipulananthan for his commitment to medical education. Here is what they had to say:
"Dr. Vipulananthan always goes the extra mile for patients and integrates clinical learning into a normal OR day. He always practices evidence-based medicine! He continually re-evaluates his practice and makes adjustments based on observed outcomes and feedback. He is a great example of a physician and is someone I would feel confident having care for a family member.”
“Dr. Vipulananthan routinely plans teaching in anticipation of an OR day and utilizes every bit of time in a given OR day to provide excellent clinical teaching. He challenges resident decisions and actions to prompt clinical learning and discussion topics. He spends time outside of clinical practice to improve his teaching style and adapts it to match individual learner needs. He encourages residents to think of themselves as teachers and to learn about the theory of teaching.”
“He uses and applies a variety of approaches to learn material aside from didactic teaching. He is able to reach a wide range of learning styles…”
“He organizes many extra-curricular education opportunities such as resident journal clubs and resident led teaching sessions. In conjunction with the curriculum committee, he has completely reinvigorated our half-day and curriculum; single-handedly introducing the junior/senior split teaching. This has been a tremendous effort, something which must be recognized!”
Upon receiving the award, Dr. Vipulananthan expressed his gratitude by saying, "Thank you for all of the kind words, I am incredibly honored!" He also added that, "It has been extremely satisfying to teach this year, as I absolutely love to watch the residents learn a concept and develop their understanding. I feel grateful to be a part of their education as they continue their path and become our future colleagues."
