About Us

The Multidisciplinary Pain Clinic is a facility of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - University of Alberta, dedicated to the care of people with chronic pain, and its research and education.

The clinic is open five days a week, sees about 450 new patients a year and does about 2,500 follow-up visits. We operate out of a small but dedicated space, consisting of five consultation rooms and ancillary offices. We also have access to the operating room for major nerve blocks and procedures under fluoroscopy.

Our staff consists of four anesthesiologists with a special interest and fellowship training in pain medicine, a full time clinic registered nurse, a full time psychologist who is 50 per cent clinical and 50 per cent academic, and a full time clerk. In addition, two neurosurgeons and a psychiatrist see patients in the clinic by referral. Our allied Physical Therapist works from a nearby location on the University of Alberta Campus

We have strong collaborative links with allied disciplines, such as the Oral/Facial Pain Clinic of the Department of Dentistry and the Division of Palliative Care. We are the Northern Alberta clinic for neuromodulation procedures (spinal cord stimulation).

We also act as consultants in the management of complex perioperative pain - particularly those who have high opioid requirements - for the University of Alberta Hospital's Acute Pain Service.

At the Multidisciplinary Pain Clinic it is our mission to:

• Treat and care for people who have chronic pain
• Educate the medical profession and others about pain
• Conduct research into pain and pain treatments
• Raise the profile of chronic pain as a health issue
