Clinical Scholar Announcement
7 April 2020
We are pleased to announce the arrival of our fifth Clinical Scholar, Dr. Daneel Heyns. He has joined the Clinical Scholar Program which is designed for IMG trained Anesthesiologists to complete a three-year term at the University of Alberta Hospital. The scholars work a 0.8 Clinical FTE and a 0.2 FTE in Research, Education or Quality Improvement, while working towards completing their FRCPC. This is a unique, Canada-wide program that we are excited to be leading as we welcome participants over the upcoming months.
Dr. Heyns earned his MBChB degree from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2002. After serving as a Medical Officer for a couple of years in a variety of remote hospitals in South Africa he completed his Anesthesia Residency training at the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein in 2010. He moved to Durham, North Carolina and completed a Cardiothoracic Anesthesia fellowship at Duke University in 2011. During the Fellowship, he trained in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography and earned Diplomate status from the National Board of Echocardiography. He then moved back to South Africa where he practiced with a private anesthesia group in Bloemfontein for eight years.
In 2020 Dr. Heyns came to Canada with his wife and two elementary school aged children and is very excited to explore new practice and academic opportunities in Edmonton. He reads books on a variety of subjects, likes to hike and cycle outdoors. He enjoys exploring new technology and to find practical applications to match the capabilities of the newest tech devices.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Daneel Heyns.
