Student Success
Congratulations to Jared Gonet, the recipient of a 2021-2022 Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies (ACUNS) POLAR Northern Resident Scholarship Award. The ACUNS award program recognizes students and early-career researchers from across Canada for their research and outreach work in the Arctic and sub-Arctic. Gonet, who works in the Department of Renewable Resources, received this award for his PhD research in conservation biology which looks at the intersection of Indigenous knowledge and western science in conservation planning. The scholarship is valued at $10,000.

In November 2021, second-year sustainable agriculture student Amanda Hardman presented at the Bayer Youth Ag Summit 2021. One of only two Canadians selected to present at the summit — which welcomed 100 delegates from 44 countries — Hardman presented a prototype clamshell package made of sugar fibre intended to transport lettuce in order to help combat the amount of plastic packaging used in the produce aisle of grocery stores.
The University of Alberta's Golden Bears & Pandas recently shared that a record number of student-athletes have earned Academic All-Canadian (AAC) honours in 2020/21. These student-athletes have maintained an average of 80% or better over the academic year, and six of them study in ALES!
Congratulations to Abby Marks - Pandas Curling, Jessica Mantik - Pandas Swimming, Maya Asselin-Debelic - Pandas Track, Katherine Johnson - Pandas Tennis, Emma Kary - Pandas Basketball and Jody Siemens - Pandas Rugby.
Faculty Excellence
We're so lucky to have a number of talented and passionate faculty members working in ALES. Congratulations to the following faculty members who have received ALES teaching, research and distinguished service awards.
Dan Barreda, professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science, has been awarded an ALES Faculty Teaching Award. This award encourages and recognizes excellence in undergraduate teaching.
Feng Qiu, associate professor in the Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology, has received a North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Teaching Award of Merit. The NACTA award encourages and recognizes meritorious efforts in undergraduate teaching.
Caroline Richard, assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science, has received an ALES Research and Innovation Award. This award is given to recognize the outstanding individual contributions of new staff members in the areas of research and innovation.
And lastly, Stephanie Dickie, student services advisor, and Boyd Mori, assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science, were each recognized with an ALES Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes outstanding contributions by individual academic and non-academic staff members for service to their department, faculty, university and/or community.
