STUDENT SUCCESS
Congratulations to Danieli Fernando who received a 2022 Alberta Diabetes Institute Summer Studentship Award! Fernando will be completing a research project in professor Catherine Chan's lab in the Department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Science.
Three ALES students were honoured with a 2021/22 President's Trophy Award from Golden Bears & Pandas Athletics. The President's Trophy Award is given annually to student-athletes on each varsity team in their fourth or fifth year who have made an exceptional overall contribution to their team as an outstanding leader, athlete and role model. Congratulations all!
Vanessa Jarman, Pandas Volleyball, is a two-time member of Team Canada at the Summer Universiade Games (2017, 2019).
Katie Johnson, Pandas Tennis, is a 2021 Tennis Canada University champion.
Abby Marks, Pandas Curling, is a 2020 U SPORTS Champion and Academic All-Canadian. Abby also received the 2021/22 Team Most Valuable Player award in Pandas Curling.
ALES students Payton Laumback, Pandas Hockey, and Kory White, Pandas Volleyball, were also named the 2021/22 Most Valuable Player for their respective teams. Amazing work!
Finally, Pandas Hockey forward Natalie Kieser was honoured as Female Rookie of the Year. She becomes the eighth hockey athlete since 1998 to be named the UAlberta Female Rookie of the Year. Kieser led Canada West rookies with nine goals and 16 points in 20 games, adding 42 shots and a +10 rating in 20 conference games. The Morinville, Alberta product also led the Pandas in scoring, while finishing second on the team with 16 points. She is the second-straight Pandas hockey forward to win this award, with Madison Willan also doing so in 2020.
FACULTY EXCELLENCE
Congratulations to Robert Froese in the Department of Renewable Resources who passed the registration exam with the Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals. Professor Froese has now received an unrestricted professional accreditation as a Registered Professional Forester, with right to title and practice in Alberta.
