Universidad de Oriente Santiago de Cuba - Spring Program
City: Santiago de Cuba Country: Cuba
Overview
What the Program has to offer:
- “Cuba: Myths and Realities” (LA ST 499) is designed for all students who have completed two years of coursework at the U of A to immerse themselves in studying Cuban culture, history, and politics.
- While Spanish is not required, it will certainly be an asset.
- The course is based in Cuba’s oldest city, Santiago, a place steeped in Afro-Cuban traditions and rich in history.
- We will spend mornings in the classroom, talking to University of Oriente professors, students, local artists, and musicians. In the afternoons, we will visit historical and cultural sites like El Cobre, a former copper mine worked by slaves, which is now the home of the Virgin of Charity, the patron saint of Cuba.
- We will also have longer excursions to the Castro family farm in Birán (about an hour away) and Fundación Caguayo, a massive open-air arts studio.
