Research-Based Learning

Definition

Research Based Learning includes diverse approaches for students to actively engage in research activities. Participating in research enables learners to pursue in-depth exploration into a topic of interest, while developing an understanding of research and evaluation processes. Research Based Learning can also help learners explore or clarify future career opportunities, develop peer and near-peer connections, facilitate faculty mentorship and cultivate transferable skills. Whether assisting with faculty-led research or engaging in a directed reading course, Research Based Learning familiarizes students with research-specific and transferable skills that may enrich their academic journey and foster personal growth.

Types of Community Engaged and Work-Integrated Learning

Research Assistantship

Opportunities for students to work with a supervising faculty member and assist them in conducting research. Students gain hands-on research experience in various capacities.

Creative Activities

Research opportunities that combine both creative and academic application. Students engage in projects and/or productions of audio, visual, theatrical or other formats of creative performance under the guidance of a supervising faculty member.

Directed Reading Courses

Opportunities for students to rigorously investigate a topic of their own interest that are not offered within the regular course selection, under guidance of a faculty supervisor. Scholarly activities and criteria of the directed course are determined by the student and their supervisor. Different faculties may label this as a “Directed Study” or “Research Opportunity Course”.

Community Engaged Research

Students connect disciplinary learning, skill development and concepts through activities designed with a community organization to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.

Benefits

  • Ignites student motivation and engagement
  • Offers supervised opportunities to engage with research and research methodologies
  • Develop skills in critical thinking, project management/coordination, data analysis

Recognition + Compensation

Students are recognized and/or compensated for Research Based Learning uniquely, based on the experience. Some opportunities may be academically tied into a student’s program and recognized with credit. Other opportunities may be considered extra-curricular research experience and may be paid or unpaid. Note: students may be eligible, or may be required to, apply for funding to facilitate research opportunities.
