Dr. Tony Qiu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta and holds both the Canada Research Chair in Cooperative Transportation Systems and the NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Intelligent Transportation Systems. Since joining the U of A in 2009, Dr. Qiu founded the Centre for Smart Transportation (CST) and was recently appointed the Scientific Director for the Autonomous Systems Initiative (ASI), a multi-million dollar, Campus Alberta, research program focused on developing artificial intelligence and automated systems. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2007 and his BSc. and MSc. from Tsinghua University of China in 2001 and 2003, respectively. From 2008-2009, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the California PATH Program at the University of California, Berkeley.
Research
Dr. Qiu's theoretical contributions form two interrelated categories: traffic system dynamics modeling and model prediction control based active traffic and demand management. His research into traffic dynamics includes both microscopic and macroscopic simulation modeling at the driver and system levels. Further enhancing this research is his application of model predictive control to determine and assess methods of reducing congestion and improving safety for road users.
His theoretical research has informed and enriched his many practical contributions, which have been widely supported by members of industry, provincial and national road agencies, and government funding agencies. His cell phone based traffic OD and speed estimation and prediction research has been implemented in several cities globally. Dr. Qiu's research in active traffic and demand management has resulted in several successful and ongoing collaborations, including with the City of Edmonton on Whitemud Drive freeway control, the Edmonton Transit System in the area of transit improvement, the Alberta Motor Transport Association in the area of commercial driver training and fleet management, and several industry and government organizations in the groundbreaking area of Connected Vehicle technology.
