Faces of WISEST: Spencer Tulk

SRP 2022

I participated in the 2022 Summer Research Program where I worked in a virtual biochemistry placement. Prior to the SRP, I knew I loved STEM, however, the experiences and people I met through the program grew my comfortability in those intimidating environments and helped me understand the limitless choices I had for secondary education. As both a transgender man and chronically ill student, I had a lot of doubts about how I could go down my aspired career path where most people I saw did not go through my struggles, but through the WISEST program’s above and beyond accessibility, I felt like I was just as capable as my peers.

Currently, I’m focusing on my physical health and using my spare time between doctor’s visits volunteering support to transgender youth both inside and outside of STEM communities. Two of the most important volunteer activities I participate in would be WISEST Alumni Support to the SRP students each summer and co-facilitating monthly trans-exclusive support meetings through an LGBTQ support organization. The WISEST Alumni support is by far one of my favourite things I got out of the SRP, as I can see how brilliant and hard-working the students are and hopefully make their adjustments easier.

WISEST undoubtedly influenced my career path, as it educated me on my limits, realistic options, and most importantly what I truly love about STEM. In the near future I am very excited to move on to secondary STEM education and continue to support younger students in their own STEM journeys.
