Multiethnic mobilization in the Habsburg Monarchy during the First World War: the case of the Kriegsbildkarten series of 1914/15

Joachim Bürgschwentner is an employee at the City Archive/City Museum in Innsbruck, Austria. He is a historian with a focus on the areas of war relief, (visual) media, censorship, propaganda and war art in the First World War. In November 2017 he concluded his PhD at the University of Innsbruck entitled „Zwischen materieller und mentaler Kriegsfürsorge. Die staatliche Produktion von Ansichtskarten in Österreich während des Ersten Weltkriegs (‘Between material and mental war relief. The state-run production of picture postcards in Austria during the First World War’). His publications include an English language article on this topic, ‘War Relief, Patriotism and Art’, published in Austrian Studies 21 (2013). Joachim has a lasting connection to the Wirth Institute: he was a guest researcher in 2006/07; from 2010-2012 he served as a board member and from 2012-2014 as president of the Wirth Alumni Network.
