- Are men allowed in the rooms to visit? Can they stay overnight?
Men are allowed to visit within prescribed hours and not overnight. In order to access the residence areas, a resident must accompany them, and they must sign in when they arrive (after 10pm) and sign out when they leave.
- Do I have to attend church?
No; however those wishing to attend church services are more then welcome to do so. There are two chapels available to students and the general public: Kateri Chapel (off the lobby of the Women's Residence) and St. Joseph's Chapel (west wing of the main building).
- Do I have to be Catholic to live at SJC?
No; however, most residents are Catholic.
- Do I have to take classes at SJC while I am living there?
No; however, SJC offers a wide range of courses that can serve as electives in most degree programs. Check out SJC's courses.
- Do residents have their own room?
Yes, each suite contains private, lockable bedrooms.
- Do the residences get together for social events?
The residences organize a variety of social events throughout the year.
- Do you offer student parking?
No; however, students can purchase parking passes on campus through University of Alberta Parking Services.
- How are the rooms furnished? Is bedding provided? What kind of home furnishings can I bring?
Each bedroom will have a captain's bed (dresser drawers underneath), a desk, and some closet space. Residents are expected to provide and clean their own bed linens (pillows, sheets, etc). The Director of Residence must approve all extra furnishings before they are brought into the residence.
- How far is the nearest grocery store?
There are two grocery stores nearby: Sobey's at 112 Street and 83 Avenue (a five-minute walk), and Safeway at 109 Street and 82 Avenue (a fifteen-minute walk).
- How long is the lease?
The women's residence has two different lease options: an 8-month lease and a 12-month lease.
- How many people share each unit?
The women's residence has three different unit types: one, two, and four bedroom suites. Each room within the suite can be locked although all suite-mates share the unit bathroom(s) and kitchen.
- How will rooms be assigned?
Prospective residents can indicate on their application form the type of accommodation they prefer. For the 1 and 2 bedroom units, preference is given to senior (3rd-4th year), while first year students will more likely be placed in four bedroom units.
- Is the residence involved in campus sports?
The Men's Residence has won the U.A.B. Cup as the top intramural unit in the Campus Recreation Men's "A" Conference for the last 30 years. In addition, the Women's Residence regularly challenges for participation awards. All residents can participate in up to 24 different activities throughout the year. There are usually competitive and fun teams in each sport.
- Is there a TV in each unit?
No; but there are TV's in the common area lounges.
- Is there free Wi-Fi?
Free University Wireless Service (UWS) Wi-Fi is available to all residents.
- What kind of cooking facilities does the unit have? Are the kitchens fully stocked with pots, pans, plates, etc?
The kitchens are equipped with chairs, a common table, refrigerator, stove, and microwave. Residents are expected to provide their own additional kitchenware (pots, pans, utensils, etc).
- Will my roommates be in the same school year? If not, what kind of age difference might there be?
There might be some school year or age difference between the residents within a suite, but the College will try to place roommates who are compatible.You will have an opportunity to request specific roommates. All potential roommates must make the request to room together.
SJC is home to a 2-storey NEOS affiliated library and a large student lounge on the main floor for study space.
