This page contains a social cohesion resource for building healthy communities and its accompanying companion document created by the Centre for Healthy Communities’ Social Cohesion Working Group in collaboration with the CHC’s Health Equity Research Thematic Area.
Social cohesion is a concept that refers to the level of trust and connectedness within a community. Living within a socially cohesive community has been associated with a wide range of improved health outcomes for its members. As such, enhancing community social cohesion has the potential to be an avenue for health promotion efforts aimed at improving the health of community members.
This document presents research-informed health benefits associated with socially cohesive communities as well as numerous strategies designed to help strengthen community social cohesion in Alberta.
