EVENT 1:  Methods Workshop: Listening in Social Science Research

Designed for graduate students in social sciences but open to the public, this workshop focuses on the practice of "listening" in research, emphasizing empathetic and ethnographic approaches. Participants will learn to engage deeply with subjects, capturing individual opinions and communal values without imposing preconceived notions. 

EVENT 2: Researcher Roundtable: Populism and Elections in the United States and Canada

This session focuses on the role of populism in shaping election campaigns and outcomes in Canada and the United States.  Panelists will draw insights from public opinion, public policy,  and public administration research to make sense of recent and upcoming elections on both sides of the border.

Join us as we welcome Elissa Strome, Executive Director of the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy at Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), to discuss Canada's opportunity to shape the future of AI. Discover how Canada’s strengths, culture and values are influencing the global development of AI that delivers benefits to society and mitigates the risks. 

A panel of U of A experts, moderated by Geoffrey Rockwell, will explore the implications and innovations of AI in arts, computing science, the labour force, health and medicine. Panelists include Nidhi Hegde from the Department of Computing Science, Ross Mitchell from the Department of Medicine, and Nicole Denier of the Department of Sociology, who will provide unique cross-disciplinary insights.

Join us for the next Henry Marshall Tory lecture “Finding Common Ground in Polarized Times: Rediscovering Alberta’s Political Culture” presented by Dr. Jared Wesley PhD.
In this public lecture, Jared Wesley explores the gap between who Albertans actually are and who they see themselves to be as a community. Based on engaging thousands of Albertans, his insights provide a toolkit for citizens eager to tamp down the factionalism that has gripped our communities over the
past decade.

Following the lecture participate in a spirited panel discussion facilitated by Jennifer Crosby, Director of Media Strategy, University of Alberta. Joining Dr. Wesley in the conversation will be Doug Griffiths, President & CEO Edmonton Chamber of Commerce and Puneeta McBryan, CEO Edmonton Downtown Business Association.
