IDRC Scholarships

The International Development Research Centre funds MA, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers from Canada and from developing countries for research related to international development.

Trudeau Foundation

Each year the Trudeau Foundation offers scholarships to outstanding doctoral students in Canada who work in areas related to the four themes of the foundation: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada in the World, and People in their Natural Environment.

Prairie Political Science Association: Essay Competition

The Prairie Political Science Association sponsors an annual student essay competition. The same student paper may not be submitted to more than one of the following categories:

Eligibility

Students must belong to a university, university-college, or college that is a member of the Prairie Political Science Association
Political Science departments that are members of the Prairie Political Science Association may nominate one (1) paper in each category
Direct submissions by students will not be accepted

UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA AWARDS

Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to outstanding doctoral students of any citizenship who are excellent scholars whose intellect "is complemented by a sound character."

Andrew Stewart Prize

Awarded to doctoral students of any citizenship with significant research accomplishments who have completed at least two years of doctoral study.

Applications for both the Killam and Andrew Stewart awards are solicited and evaluated at the department level in the winter semester, and all eligible students in receipt of department funding are required to apply.

DEPARTMENT AWARDS

Frank Peers Graduate Research Scholarship
Endowed by Frank W Peers

Criteria: Two scholarships awarded annually on the basis of excellent academic standing and research potential to students registered full-time in a graduate degree program, one in History and Classics and one in Political Science at the University of Alberta. The scholarship is intended to provide assistance for the recipients' research programs.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the Department of History and Classics and the Department of Political Science. In nominating a student for the scholarship, the departments may take financial need into consideration.

Frederick and Mary Engelmann Graduate Travel Scholarship in Political Science
Funded by family and friends of Dr. Frederick Engelmann in his memory

Criteria : Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta on the basis of superior academic achievement. The funds are to be used for travel to present their research at an academic conference in Canada or Western Europe. This award should alternate year to year between the areas of Canadian and Comparative studies. Preference will be given to a student studying Comparative with a focus on Central Europe or Europe in general.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the Department of Political Science.

Hugh McCall Graduate Award
Endowed by Frank W. Peers

Criteria: One award offered annually to a student registered full-time in a graduate program in the Department of Economics, History & Classics, Political Science, or Sociology whose research is related to US Policy Studies and whose research fits within the strategic research priorities of the Institute for US Policy Studies at the University of Alberta. The award is to provide assistance for research and travel expenses and the recipient will be selected on the basis of satisfactory academic standing.

Application: Eligible students should submit a letter of application to the Chair of their home department. Each eligible department will submit the name of one nominee to the Dean.The Faculty of Arts will make the final selection.

J Peter Meekison Graduate Scholarship in Political Science

Value $ 2000

Criteria: Awarded annually to students entering a full-time Master's degree program in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta whose area of study is Canadian politics or federalism. Selection will be based on academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to leadership in community affairs.

John Garrett Graduate Scholarship in United States Studies
Endowed by Frank W Peers as a tribute to his friend and classmate (Arts 1936) John Garrett who graduated with first-class honours and who was a Rhodes Scholar from Alberta in 1937.

Criteria: One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of superior academic standing (equivalent to a grade point average of 3.5 or greater) and research potential to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in either the Department of Economics or Political Science. The scholarship will be awarded alternately between the Department of Economics and the Department of Political Science for the study of problematic aspects of Canada-United States relations, or for the dissemination of scholarly information in this field of study.In odd-numbered years awarded to a student registered in the Department of Economics and in even-numbered years awarded to a student registered in the Department of Political Science. In the event that a candidate cannot be found in the specified department, the scholarship may be awarded to a student registered in the other department.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the Department of Economics or Political Science as appropriate. In nominating a student for the scholarship, the departments may take financial need into consideration.

Lynne Anne Baldwin Memorial Award
Endowed by the estate of the late Lynne Anne Baldwin, a politically active citizen of our community who studied Political Science part-time in the Faculty of Arts while working as a neuro-surgical nurse, and who was awarded a BA in Political Science in 1992.

Value: variable

Criteria: Awarded annually to a student(s) registered as a full-time student in a graduate degree program in the Department of Political Science. Awarded on the basis of superior academic standing and scholarly excellence (Minimum GPA of 3.5/4.0) to a student whose research is in Gender and Politics.

Application: Eligible students will be considered automatically.

Senator Donald Cameron Graduate Scholarship
Endowed by Frank W Peers as a tribute to Senator Donald Cameron, U of A alumnus, a former Director of Extension at the University of Alberta and of the Banff School of Fine Arts

Criteria: One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of superior academic standing (equivalent to a grade point average of 3.5 or greater), and research potential to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in either the Department of History and Classics or the Department of Political Science. The scholarship will be awarded alternately between the Department of History and Classics and the Department of Political Science for the study of Canadian history OR Canadian government and politics. In even-numbered years awarded to a student registered in the Department of History and Classics and in odd-numbered years awarded to a student registered in the Department of Political Science. In the event that a candidate cannot be found in the specified department, the scholarship may be awarded to a student registered in the other department or may not be awarded that year.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the Department of History and Classics or the Department of Political Science as appropriate. In nominating a student for the scholarship, the departments may take financial need into consideration.

Dr Okon Udokang Memorial Graduate Scholarship
Funded by Mrs Patricia Udokang in memory of her late husband Okon Udokang

Criteria: Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in a Master's or PhD program in the Department of Political Science on the basis of superior academic standing (minimum grade point average equivalent to 3.5 or greater on the University of Alberta grading scale). Preference may be given to a student whose work relates to some aspect of international law and policy.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the Department of Political Science.
