Centrally Administered Awards: Apply Through the Beartracks Portal

There is a central application and adjudication process for most continuing and convocating undergraduate scholarships and awards.  The application portal is on Beartracks, and it is open from January 15 - April 1, with awards announced in June.  Undergraduate Awards has more information, as does Additional Scholarship Information.

Political Science students are eligible for many awards, depending on the criteria specified in the award descriptions.  These include First Nations, Métis and Inuit Awards, Undergraduate & Graduating Awards Listed by Faculty, and Government of Alberta Undergraduate Academic Scholarships and Leadership Awards

FT Jenner Memorial Prizes in Canadian Studies

Field of Study: Canadian Studies

To be awarded to students with superior academic achievement in a Political Science program. Preference will be given to students whose stated intent is the further study of Canadian traditions, culture and development. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic standing and activities and achievements in the realm of Canadian politics and society.

Alastair R and Irma MacLeod Scholarship

Field of Study: Political Science

To be awarded annually to students with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of studies in Political Science. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of academic standing and a demonstrated interest in socialist thought. Preference will be given to students in financial need.

Endowed through a bequest from the Estate of Irma MacLeod.


Stephen and Lynn Mandel Scholarship in Political Science

Field of Study: Political Science

Awarded to student(s) with superior academic achievement entering any year of a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science or a Bachelor of Arts Honors in Political Science. Selection based on academic standing. Preference given to student(s) enrolled in the Community Engagement and Service-Learning certificate program.

Scott Thorkelson Scholarship in the Study of Public Policy and Administration

Field of Study: Political Science

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of study for a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Political Science, who has completed at least one course in Public Policy and Administration. Selection based on demonstrated involvement in activities and/or employment relating to Public Policy and Administration.

Ranjan Agarwal and Sunita Bhowmik Scholarship in Arts

Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement enrolled in any year of a Bachelor of Arts Honors in the Faculty of Arts. Selection based on academic standing. Preference given to a student in a Bachelor of Arts Honors in Political Science in the Faculty of Arts.

Annually funded by Mr Ranjan Agarwal and Mrs Sunita Bhowmik for a minimum 5 years.


Alexander MacGibbon Medal in Political Science [Convocation Medal]

Conditions: Awarded to the student convocating from Honors Political Science with highest distinction.

The Medal is awarded upon nomination by the Department of Political Science.

Funded by: Endowed by the late Dr DA MacGibbon of Hamilton, Ontario.


Roberta E McKown Prize in Political Science [Convocation Prize]

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a graduate of the Bachelor of Arts (AR20) degree in Political Science with the highest grade point average (GPA) in Political Science courses, provided that a minimum GPA of 3.5 is attained. The GPA in this case will be calculated on the basis of all political science courses taken as part of the Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Alberta. In the event of a tie, the award shall be split between the students.

This Prize is awarded upon nomination by the Department of Political Science.

Alison White Honors Prizes [Convocation Prize]

Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement who is convocating in the Honors program of the Faculty of Arts. Recipients will be students who maintain the highest GPA in the four years of their programs. One prize will be given in each of the Faculty's three disciplines (Humanities, Social Sciences, and Fine Arts), while the other two prizes will be awarded in any of the three disciplines. In no case will an Honors prize be awarded to a student with a GPA of less than 3.7.

The Social Sciences Prize is awarded upon nomination by the Faculty of Arts.
