Call for Proposals: International Conference on Eye of the Tiger: Taiwan’s View of the ‘China Issue'
From May 29 to June 1, 2025, the University of Alberta will host select scholars to present their research at an international conference held in Banff, Canada. Co-organizers Ashley Esarey (University of Alberta) and Jieh-min Wu (Academia Sinica) encourage the submission of abstracts related to themes outlined above by scholars of any discipline in the humanities and the social sciences, with the aim of revising select conference papers for an edited volume published by a university press.
Conference presentations will touch upon a broad range of topics; however, papers on the following subjects, are particularly welcome.
- Taiwanese views of their identity and points of connection or disconnection with Chinese culture and nationalism
- Taiwan’s self-conception in the Sinophone world.
- Legacy of the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) in Taiwan, including within contemporary political institutions
- Impact of China’s rise on Taiwanese nation building, identity formation, and democratization
- Taiwan-China contestation in military affairs or international organizations
- Effects of the “China issue” on trade, public health, or technology development
- Historical or comparative studies of Chinese empire building in Northeast and Southeast Asia
- Emergence and evolution of Chinese views on the “Taiwan issue”
Interested researchers should send abstracts of 400 words or less to taiwanst@ualberta.ca by January 3, 2024. Notifications of acceptance will go out on February 4. The organizers will provide participants with lodging for three nights in Banff, meals during the conference, and limited travel expenses.
