Congratulations to MA student Hussain Alaeddin Alhussainy, recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal
M. Whitecotton-Carroll - 20 November 2024
Hussain Aladeein Alhussainy will receive the King Charles III Coronation Medal in a ceremony in early December. The Honourable Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, nominated him for the award.
The Coronation Medal was created to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, which took place on May 6, 2023. It is the first Canadian commemorative medal to mark a coronation.
The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General is responsible for administering the King Charles III Coronation Medal program.
Eligible candidates must meet the following national criteria: the recipient has made a significant contribution to Canada or to a particular province, territory, region or community of Canada; or has made an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada.
Hussain is an MA student in the Department of Political Science and already a recipient of the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) award. His academic focus spans critical disability studies and colonial/post-colonial studies in the Middle East. In his current research, Hussain challenges narratives that depict the Middle East as indifferent to disability rights and inclusion. Additionally, Hussain’s research contrasts Western and Middle Eastern understandings of disability: while Western frameworks often treat disability as an individual issue tied to economic productivity, Middle Eastern perspectives, prior to colonization and Western influence, have historically understood disability through a more collective lens.
Congratulations Hussain!
