Awards

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences offers the following awards/scholarships.

 

 

Alberta Odd Fellow Rebekah Vision Science Graduate Student Research Award

Terms: Selection is based on satisfactory academic achievement, research ability, and contribution to basic and/or clinical vision research. Preference will be given to applicants with research focused on treatment or prevention of age-related vision loss.

Award: Up to $1000 - current academic year - 2023/2024

Eligibility: Applications will be accepted from graduate students registered in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences  in a full time master's or doctoral degree program studying and conducting research in the field of vision science.

Application Deadline: April 12, 2024

Edwin Isaac Clarke Scholarship

Terms: Selection is based on satisfactory academic achievement, research ability, and contribution to basic and/or clinical vision research with a preference given to research that is relevant to ophthalmology and cancer.

Award:

Residents:  One Award for up to $500 - current academic year - 2023/2024

Other Trainee: Undergraduate, Medical Student, Graduate Student, Fellow (Clinical or Research) - One Award for up to $500 - current academic year - 2023/2024

Eligibility: Applicants will be accepted from residents and other trainees studying and conducting research in the field of ophthalmology and cancer within the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences.

Helen Colburn Scholarship

Terms: Selection is based on satisfactory academic achievement, research ability, and contribution to basic and/or clinical vision research.

Award:

Residents:  One Award for up to $500 - current academic year -  2023/2024

Other Trainee: Undergraduate, Medical Student, Graduate Student, Fellow (Clinical Research) - One Award for up to $500 - current academic year - 2023/2024

Eligibility: Applicants will be accepted from residents and other trainees studying and conducting research into the underlying cause(s) and/or method(s) of cure for eye disease within the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences.

Application Open: March 4, 2024

Application Deadline: April 12, 2024

Indigenous Care / Equity Diversity Inclusion Research Award

Terms: Selection is based on satisfactory academic achievement, research ability, and contribution to Indigenous Care and/or Equity Diversity and Inclusion in vision research.

Award: One award for $200 for - current Academic Year – 2023/2024

Eligibility: Applications will be accepted from Undergraduate Students, Medical Students, Graduate Students, Residents, and Fellows (Clinical or Research) studying and conducting research within the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences relating to Indigenous Care and/or Equity Diversity and Inclusion.

Patricia Ann Peat Student & Residency Fund in Ophthalmology
To assist the Department of Ophthalmology in providing exciting and personally enriching experiences in the discipline of ophthalmic medicine. This fund is accessible by all medical students registered in the MD Program at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. The fund is also open to any residents registered in the first two years of the ophthalmology program at the University of Alberta Department of Ophthalmology.
Reg Martiniuk Research Day Award
Terms: Selection is based on best presentation at Annual Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Research Day.

Award: Up to $750 (Resident)

Eligibility: Will need to do an oral or poster presentation at the Annual Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Research Day.
Precision Medicine Award

TermsSelection is based on satisfactory academic achievement, research ability, and contribution to basic and/or clinical vision research. Preference will be given to research aimed at 1) Improved diagnostics 2) Targeted therapies or 3) Advances in surgical instrumentation as related to ophthalmic disease.

Award

Residents:  One Award for up to $5000 - current academic year -  2023/2024

Other Trainee: Undergraduate, Medical Student, Graduate Student, Fellow (Clinical Research) - One Award for up to $5000 - current academic year - 2023/2024

Eligibility: All awarded applicants must be affiliated with a grant holder designated as a faculty member within the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences that is able to hold research grants.

VISION SCIENCE GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD
The award is based on research ability and contribution to basic and/or clinical vision research related to treatment or prevention of age-related vision loss.
Winner: Ehsan Misaghi
For his research in “Investigating the role of PIKFYVE in the retinal pigment epithelium”

Edwin Isaac Clarke Scholarship

The scholarship is focused on studying and conducting research in the field of Ophthalmology and Cancer
Winner I: Nikki Chopra
For her research project “Management of uveal melanoma and the detection and diagnosis of primary uveal melanoma metastatic disease”
Winner II: Ojas Srivastava
For his research project “Uveal melanoma patient responses to anti-VEGF therapies to help treat and prevent radiation retinopathy”

Carl's contribution to the research project  “Intraretinal silicone oil migration” 

Reg Martiniuk Research Day Award

BEST CLINICAL RESEARCH AWARD
Winner: Emily Laycock
for presentation entitled “Analyzing clinical variables indicative of uveal melanoma to determine how they affect decisions made by an artificial intelligence classifier”
BEST BASIC SCIENCE AWARD
Winner: Ehsan Misaghi
