Undergraduate Electives
Ophthalmology offers the following types of electives to University of Alberta Undergraduate Medical Students:
Shadowing - for Second year U of A Medical Students
- Students contact the Program Administrator directly with 3-4 possible times and dates for shadowing
- The Administrator will review the Eye Clinic's schedule to determine if there is space to accommodate the request
- The Administrator will let the student know if they can be accommodated or not. If yes, then they will be provided with the details of where to go and who to report to
- Students must bring their ID and where appropriate attire
Third & Fourth year U of A Medical Students
- Students apply for an elective through the Medical School Information System (MedSIS) portal
- Ophthalmology can accept one medical student per two week elective block and they are booked on a first come first served basis
- Program Administrator will accept or decline the request through the MedSIS portal
- Students will receive their two week schedule a month before their scheduled visit along with logistical information
Third & Fourth year Canadian Medical Students
- Students apply for an elective through the Association of Faculty's of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) portal
- Ophthalmology can accept one medical student per two week elective block and they are booked on a first come first served basis
- Program Administrator will accept or decline the request through the AFMC portal
- Students will receive their detailed elective schedule by email prior to the start of their visit along with logistical information
