Program of Assessment

  • PGY - 1

    In the first year, resident training is focused on Core Surgical Training. We have been part of the RCPSC Surgical Foundations program for over 15 years, and our residents have taken the Surgical Foundations RCPSC exam for the past 5 years. It has become a mandatory part of Obstetrics and Gynecology RCPSC training commencing in 2016, and we feel well-prepared at the University of Alberta since we have been a part of our University program for years.

    • 20 weeks of General Ob/Gyn
    • 8 weeks General Surgery
    • 8 weeks General Medicine
    • 4 weeks ER
    • 4 weeks Ultrasound
    • 4 weeks NICU

    Residents attend the Surgical Foundations half days on Wednesday mornings.  There may be opportunities to attend the OBGYN half day on Wednesday afternoons.

  • PGY - 2

    During the second year, our resident program focuses on the management of high-risk Obstetrics and General Gynecology surgical skills. Training includes 10 months of Core Ob/Gyn studies carried out at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Misercordia and the Grey Nuns Hospital sites.

    We also expose our residents to 4 week block at the Women's Health Options, family planning block and 8 week block at ICU.

    • Principles of Surgery (POS) Exam
    • The Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) Exam (optional)
    • CanMeds OSCE Exam (within Surgical Foundations Program)

  • PGY - 3

    The third year of our program focuses of subspecialty training, including:

    • 12 weeks of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM)
    • 12 weeks of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility (REI)
    • 16 weeks of Community OBGYN, 8 weeks of which could be done in a rural center with financial support
    • 12 weeks of electives/selectives

    * During the 8 weeks of Rural blocks Ob/Gyn, this time is spent in locations including Grande Prairie, Red Deer and Medicine Hat. Resident accommodations and travel are arranged through the department.

  • PGY - 4

    In their penultimate year, our residents focus on advanced pelvic surgery. Study and training this year includes:

    • 12 weeks Gyne Oncology (GYN ONC)
    • 12 weeks Urogynecology (UROGYN)
    • 16 weeks of Chief resident responsibilities
    • 8 weeks Elective/Selective
    • 4 weeks Minimally Invasive Surgerty (Selective Mandatory)

    During their final 3 months in PGY-4, students begin their Chief Year at our various hospital sites.

  • PGY - 5

    In the final year of residency, students grow in their roles as Site Chiefs acting as Junior Consultants in Labor and Delivery, and prepare for their Royal College Examinations. The PGY-5 year is divided as follows:

    • 32 weeks as Chief or senior resident (RAH, GNH, MCH & SCH) 
    • 16 weeks of ambulatory care at the end of the fifth year
    • 4 weeks elective/selective

    *Including 8 weeks immediately prior to & 4 weeks post the resident's Royal College Examination.

Residents receive comprehensive training while completing their residency in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, with the University of Alberta. The five year curriculum is designed to provide new physicians with the skills, abilities and competencies they need leading to RCPSC certification, and to practice.
