Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is a Centre of Excellence in education, research and clinical care in women's health.

The department has five academic divisions, 19 full-time academic faculty members, and over 100 clinical academic colleagues in general obstetrics and gynecology. Our faculty members encompass the full range of academic medicine including Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, Gynecological Oncology, Reproductive Sciences and Urogynecology.

Internationally recognized for our innovative, collaborative and multidisciplinary approaches, we are positively impacting the health of women.

Programs

Residency Training Program

Our program trains strong generalist OBGYNs and is an excellent preparation for entry into subspecialty training. Our program has been successful thanks to our resilient program and supportive faculty.

MSc and PhD Graduate Program

The graduate program provides multi-disciplinary research opportunities in women's health. At both the MSc and PhD levels, prospective students can apply directly to our programs and if qualified, may also choose to apply at the same time to the Graduate Program in Maternal and Child Health (MatCH).

Undergraduate MD Program

As a department with a strong clinical focus, we are dedicated to the education of competent and caring physicians. Clerkship goals are achieved through competencies in medical knowledge, patient care, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and practice-based learning.

Fellowship, Subspecialty Residency and Postdoctoral Opportunities

There are various fellowship and postdoctoral opportunities in Obstetrics and Gynecology, including specialized programs and external collaborations, supported by faculty mentorship and research initiatives.

    Through basic and applied studies, strong partnerships and a wide range of cross-disciplinary projects, we strive to provide current and future generations with accessible and effective healthcare solutions.

  • Champions of Women's Health

    Our department has three nationally-recognized endowed chairs, who work collaboratively to bring new perspectives into the women's healthcare field to improve the lives and health of women in all stages of life.

  • Global Health Projects

    Our faculty is involved in three international health projects in the fields of Urogynecology, Maternal-Fetal Health, and Newborn and Child Health.

Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Alberta. We strive to be recognized as the Centre of Excellence in education, research, and clinical care in women's health. This commitment to excellence, defined through leadership and scholarship in education, prevention of illness, and clinical care, is demonstrated in both our basic and applied research endeavours.

Our team of researchers, physicians, and educators are driven by a three-fold mandate: the development of an exemplary women's health program, innovative research, and a strong commitment to comprehensive patient care.

The department strives to maintain an environment of respect and teamwork. Our goal is to continue to establish a national and international reputation for excellence and collaboration in training, research, and ongoing faculty and staff development.
