Convocation Spotlight: Medical Lab Sciences '24 grad Paxton Sheppard

With the immediate hands-on application of scientific concepts that occurs in medical laboratory sciences, Paxton Sheppard knew the MLS program would be the perfect fit for him. Now, he is excited to start a new job and apply the skills he learned during his degree at the University of Alberta.

What initially drew you to medical laboratory sciences?

I was drawn to the program by my love for biology and lab work.

What are you most proud of from your time in the program?

Being able to develop and present my own research project was a massive accomplishment. I learned a lot about the scientific community and I'm proud I was able to make a contribution during my undergraduate degree!

What was the biggest challenge you faced during your degree?

Balancing my academic responsibilities with my personal life was challenging at times. Sometimes it felt like I had no energy or motivation to get things done! 

How did you stay motivated and who helped you keep going when things got tough?

Reminding myself what I was capable of and how far I'd come helped when things felt overwhelming. I also maintained a support network of close friends and family that I could rely on for help. Spending an hour talking with friends or getting some exercise can really make a difference!

What advice would you give to a student thinking of entering this program?

If you like the hands-on application of what you learn in class, medical laboratory science is for you! I have always appreciated how my program takes the extra step to show biology in action. Whether you are interested in the health-care industry or medical science research, you will find yourself surrounded by opportunities to get involved. 

What have you learned about yourself?

I learned more about my interests and what I am capable of accomplishing. Going forward I will further develop my skills and pursue opportunities to leave a lasting impact on the medical laboratory industry. 

What comes next for you?

I have received a job at a medical laboratory in Edmonton and recently began training.
