National recognition


Dr. Holger Wille, Department of Biochemistry, and his team received a Transformational Research: Canada 2019 AD-Related Diseases Award from the Weston Brain Institute for the project "Rationally designed, structure-based vaccine candidates targeting Alzheimer's disease." The award will run for three years and the team will receive a total of $1,185,060 in support.


Lena Hozaima, associate director of advancement, was awarded a CASE District VIII Rising Star Award in Advancement Services. Well done!


Dr. Hanne Ostergaard, Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, was awarded the prestigious John D. Reynolds Award for exceptional service from the Canadian Society for Immunology.

Department of Pediatrics

Congratulations to Hanifa Jassani, children's services worker from the Children's Adolescent Protection Centre and Dr. Jillian Popel (Pediatric Hospital Medicine), who were awarded the Peace in Families Award from United Cultures of Canada Association. The award is given to those who help victims of violence or assist abusers to refrain from violence.


Congratulations to post-doctoral fellow Dr. Qutuba Karwi for receiving the Alberta Innovates Postgraduate Fellowship. The fellowship is worth $165,000 over three years.

Rising in the ranks


A number of University of Alberta subjects rose in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, including physiology and anatomy, which ranked in the world's top 50. Congratulations to the Department of Physiology on the well-deserved recognition. Read more.


Dr. Ari Joffe, Department of Pediatrics, was ranked among the "Ten Most Influential Researchers Ranked by Six Different Measures of Influence" in a recent Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Journal publication entitled "Research Collaboration in Pediatric Critical Care Randomized Controlled Trials: A Social Network Analysis of Coauthorship."

Learners as leaders


The Alberta Medical Association announced Emerging Leaders in Health Promotion grant recipients for 2019/20. The grant committee received 21 applications and approved for funding seven projects from medical students and residents. Congratulations to the following U of A recipients:
