What advice would you give to new students?
Work hard, but take breaks!
What was your favourite class during your program?
As weird as it may be, my favourite class was also by far the hardest class, Cross Sectional Anatomy. It was so interesting working with cadavers and learning (in very great detail) about how the human body works.
How did you engage with student life on campus?
I had a pretty athletic upbringing, so I loved attending different varsity athletic events! In a sport context, being in a team environment highlighted how much of a people person I am. I'm very outgoing, approachable and I love interacting with people, so what better career than one that allows me to interact with people every day, both colleagues and patients?
What drew you toward Radiation Therapy as a career path?
I have always known that I wanted a career in a health-care field. I came across Radiation Therapy quite randomly, I grew up in Grande Prairie and had never heard of that specialty. My older sister actually brought home the brochure for the UAlberta program; I looked through it and my interest was immediately sparked. I love that it's a mix of technology, science and math, and most importantly, personal interaction. It's an incredibly rewarding field of work, I get to be involved firsthand in the treatment of cancer, providing care for patients and their families during one of the hardest times of their lives.
What's next for you?
I am so excited for what the future has to hold and the transition from student life to career life. I can't wait to come home from work and be able to put my feet up and relax instead of studying for the next test or finishing an assignment.
