The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is pleased to kick off 2017 with a brief but cogent list of awards, accolades and milestones. Congratulations to all on your well-earned achievements!
Happy 100th Birthday, School of Dentistry!
The official ceremony to launch of the School of Dentistry's Centennial celebrations took place on January 18, and included the presence of UAlberta president David Turpin, dean Richard Fedorak, School of Dentistry's director Paul Major, Hailey Hutton, president of the Dental Student Association, and more. It was an exciting celebration with heartfelt speeches, a birthday cake and a recount of the School of Dentistry's history and numerous accomplishments.
Faculty Awards:
Xing-Fang Li has received the Chemical Institute of Canada's 2017 Environment Division Research and Development Dima Award, for her outstanding work in the areas of water toxicity and the detection of microbial infections and other contaminants.
Roseanne Yeung of Endocrinology has earned frist place Diabetes Junior Investigator Award.
William Colmers of Pharmacology and Neuroscience has been named 2016 Alumnus of the Year by the Hotchkiss Brain Institute.
Douglas Dederich of Dentistry has received the American Academy of Periodontology's 2016 Educator Award.
Loretta Fiorillo, Pediatric Dermatology, has received Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta (PARA) 2015 - 2016 Resident Well-Being Award.
Louanne Keenan, from the Division of Community Engagement, has received the MSA Pre-Clinical Mentorship Award by second-year medical students in recognition of an outstanding contribution in the teaching of medicine.
Grad Student Awards:
Maryam Kebbe of Pediatrics has been awarded the Alberta Strategies in Patient-Oriented Research Graduate Studentship.
Ester Vazquez-Fernandez, graduate student in the Department of Biochemistry and the Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Diseases, has received a 2016 Med Star award for her graduate research.
Do you know someone doing incredible work in our community? Why not nominate them for a Community Connections Award? The awards recognize those individuals and/or groups who embody the U of A's promise to "uplift the whole people."
Award winners will be highlighted during a special ceremony at City Hall in May 2017. Nominations are due by January 27, 2017
