Join us for Mini Medical School, starting September 10
Have you ever wanted to be a medical student? Or to gain even a little bit of that vast medical knowledge?
The U of A's Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry will be hosting its annual Mini Medical School program again, in conjunction with its centennial celebrations.
Mini Medical School runs from September 10 to October 29 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays. The seminars will be held in the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy and will showcase top scientists and educators. Some of the topics include:
- Health, law, ethics & "the cure for everything"
- Evidence, anecdote and snake oil
- Screening and testing - what a doctor is looking for and what can they do if they find it?
- Gluten lactose - why have our guts become so irritable?
- Medical discoveries that changed the world
- Health technology - do robots work or merely cost a lot?
- The next 100 years of medicine
- The past 100 years of medicine
Chris de Gara, one of the key faculty members organizing the initiative, said the popular event "is an opportunity for members of the public, both young and old, to come and listen to some of our finest faculty members and professors presenting their topics in a very similar vein to what they may present to our medical students."
"This is an opportunity for members of the public to get a sense of the science and art of medicine. We try to delve deeper than merely discussing a particular disease or condition, so that the attendees can get a better understanding of why conditions may or may not develop."
