On April 5, 2013, D. Douglas Miller, dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, presented faculty, staff, students and alumni with a challenge to help celebrate the Faculty's centennial year: work together to achieve a grand total of 2,013 hours of volunteer service.
With the first week of the 2,013 Hours of Service Volunteer Challenge drawing to a close, Dr. Miller was pleased to add the first two markers to the Volunteer Challenge meters. The meters are posted throughout the medical buildings on campus.
More than 80 hours of community service have already been registered. Several staff and students have also shared their personal volunteer stories from staff and students on the Centennial website. The challenge ends on Saturday, April 27, the final day of International Volunteer Week.
The idea behind the 2,013 Hours of Service Volunteer Challenge is to encourage everyone in the Faculty to complete at least one hour of community service. There's no restriction regarding how or where the time should be spent.
Work with a registered charity or help someone in your neighbourhood directly - as long as the time is spent helping the community, it can be included in the count. The ultimate goal is to give something back to our city and its communities.
