Applied Math Institute

The Applied Math Institute (AMI) was established in 1987. The AMI aims to promote fundamental and applied research on mathematical sciences and to stimulate collaborative research within the university of Alberta community.

The AMI regularly organizes seminars and supports the publication of the Canadian Applied Mathematics Quarterly (CAMQ) - a Canadian scientific journal devoted to research articles related to the applications of mathematics. The AMI also supports national and international mathematical conferences and workshops.

Collaborative Mathematical Biology Group

The CMB seeks to bridge the gap between life scientists and mathematicians in solving problems of significance to Canadians. Its activities fall into three categories:

  1. Facilitation of multidisciplinary connections between life scientists and mathematicians, and between academics and government/industry
  2. Training of a new generation of researchers
  3. Development of interdisciplinary mathematical biology, locally, nationally and internationally

Interdisciplinary Lab for Mathematical Ecology & Epidemiology 

(ILMEE)

The ILMEE includes dozens of core members and many Canadian and International collaborators, working on several areas of mathematical biology, as diverse as modelling stoichiometry-based ecological interactions, microbiology, infectious diseases, habitat destruction and biodiversity, risk assessment of oil sands pollution, spatial memory and cognition, as well as early warning signals. Mathematical and statistical approaches include dynamical systems, data science, and machine learning.

ILMEE Lab

Institute for Geophysical Research

The IGR encourages interdisciplinary collaborations between geophysical researchers and their students. The Institute defines geophysical research quite broadly to include study of the Earth, its oceans, atmosphere and cryosphere and its near-space environment. It also includes study of the sun, the other planets and the solar wind and its interactions with planetary magnetic fields.

Statistics Division

Within the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Alberta: We teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Statistics and Probability. We provide a centre for discussion of research problems and methodological advances in statistics and probability. We serve as a training facility for graduate students in applied statistics, through the provision of a courtesy consulting service, funded by the department, for members of the University community. We provide statistical consulting for external clients in business, government and industry on a fee-for-service basis.
