Other Competitions

Other than the Alberta High School Mathematics Competition, the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences hosts writings of several other competitions during the school year. Some of these contests are generally written in schools, but if your school does not offer a particular contest then you may be able to write with us. If you would like to write a contest that is not listed below send a request to Sean Graves (sgraves@ualberta.ca).

Four students writing a mathematics competition

CMS Mathematics Competitions:

The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) is Canada’s premier national mathematics competition open to any student with an interest in and grasp of high school math. It is also the first exam on the road to the International Mathematical Olympiad. The purpose of the COMC is to encourage students to explore, discover, and learn more about mathematics and problem solving. The competition serves to provide teachers with a unique student enrichment activity during the fall term. The next COMC will be held on October 26, 2023.

The Canada Jay Mathematical Competition (CJMC) is a Canadian math competition that was created in 2020 to reach younger students. The CJMC is open to students in grades K-8, with questions based primarily on grade 5-8 curriculum. This competition has been created by mathematicians from across Canada.

The Canada Lynx Mathematical Competition is the CMS’ newest competition, with the first CLMC set to take place on September 28th, 2023. It is open to students K – 12. It is based off of the Canadian grade 7 to 11 math curriculum. This competition is meant to make math fun and engaging for students, while also serving as a great way for teachers to assess their students math level at the beginning to the year.

Tournament of the Towns

The International Mathematics Tournament of the Towns is a worldwide problem solving competition in mathematics organized in Russia. Any town can take part in it. Each year, over 10,000 students participate in the ToT. Students write the contest in their own towns/cities, thus there are no travel expenses. There are two writings of the contest each year, one in the spring and one in the fall.

CEMC Contests

These contests, organized by the Centre for Education and Computing at the University of Waterloo, inspire students in Grades 5 to 12 to get excited about math and computer science and to stretch their limits. The organizers work very hard to make sure that the contests offered are open to all, yet challenge even the most gifted students.

American Mathematics Competitions

Ever since 1950, the Mathematical Association of America has been hosting the AMC. The AMC 8 is for students in middle school level, and the AMC 10/12 contests are for students in high school. The next AMC 10/12 competitions will be held Nov 8 (A) and Nov 14 (B) 2023, and the next AMC 8 competition will be held on January 18, 2024.

Math Attack Contest

Math Attack Society is a student-run non-profit startup, co-founded in 2017 by four high school students: Kevin, Ruilin, Riri and Oliver. The annual Team Math Attack Contest is a junior high event that pioneers the inclusion of teamwork, networking, and necessity for speed in Canadian math competitions.
