Molecular genetic pathology is a specialized field that combines pathology, medical genetics, and genomics to advance patient care through genomic testing. Molecular genetic pathologists bring biochemistry, laboratory medicine, and advanced technology expertise to interpret genomic information and guide clinical decision-making. Comprehensive training covers molecular oncology, inherited and somatic diseases, infectious diseases, immunogenetics, and bioinformatics, emphasizing integrating genomic data into clinical care.
The fellowship includes hands-on training in diverse molecular techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR methods, Sanger sequencing, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). Rotations in clinical cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, and medical genetics clinics enhance the training experience. Primarily based at the University of Alberta Hospital’s Molecular Pathology Laboratory, fellows gain exposure to diagnostic services in oncology, hematology, and various pathology subspecialties. Fellows engage in teaching, research, quality assurance, and validation projects, ensuring a robust foundation for future leadership roles in molecular pathology.
