The Division of Anatomic Pathology at the University of Alberta provides essential tissue diagnostic and teaching services for in-patients and out-patients within the teaching hospital system, University of Alberta/Stollery Children's Hospital, and for patients within the region. The division is staffed by a mix of talented individuals from physicians to laboratory assistants to administrative support all of whom fulfill daily duties with dedication and devotion to quality practices. Our range of services include postmortem examination, interpretation of surgical tissue biopsies and resections, and interpretation of cytological material using routine and adjunct in-house testing including immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy among others. In concert with specialized testing elsewhere in the department, we aim to produce ideal integrated interpretive reports that incorporate various other tests such as molecular genetics and cytogenetics along with relevant results in microbiology, chemistry and hematopathology. Some of our members are actively engaged in basic, translational and clinical research. The division has an active residency training program and offers training fellowships in the fields of renal pathology and pediatric pathology. Our practices involve multidisciplinary approaches to challenging problems in an environment of collaboration and collegial consultation that helps ensure quality throughout all stages of specimen preparation and interpretation.
