TD Bank Health Sciences Scholarship
Health Sciences TD Bank Undergraduate Research Scholarship applications for winter term, due Monday, Oct. 28, 2024, 4 p.m.
Amount: $6,000
Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the fourth year of study in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation. Selection based on the submission of a personal intent letter (i.e., a project proposal) and an essay on how your degree in KSR is benefitting health, participation in an interprofessional learning experience as defined by the University of Alberta Interprofessional Learning Pathway (INT D courses, see below), and academic standing. Recipients of this award may only receive one Health Sciences TD Bank Scholarship during their entire academic career.
Eligibility
This award is for one undergraduate student at fourth year level in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation only. Eligible applicants must:
- be full-time students in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation
- have a minimum GPA of 2.0
- have completed at least 24 credits prior to the commencement of the award
- have completed RLS 210 (Recreation and Leisure Scholarship) or KIN 209 (Research Methods in Kinesiology)
- have completed INT D 403 and or INT D 408
- propose an interdisciplinary research project in health sciences
Students may apply for this award for a research project being undertaken as part of a practicum or part of a course, for a project that is part of a larger research program (e.g., supervisor's research program) or for a stand-alone project.
Conditions of Funding
Students who receive this award must agree to the following:
- spend 8-10 hours per week working on the research project
- receive $6000 at the start of the award
- present findings at the Research Revealed! undergraduate conference (usually held in March or April)
- work with the faculty marketing and communications team to promote their research activities
- acknowledge financial support from the Health Sciences TD Bank Scholarship in all publications and presentations arising from the research project.
- Specifically, award winners must state: "This project was supported by the Health Sciences TD Bank Undergraduate Research Scholarship."
Please note: this award is available ONLY to students who wish to conduct a research project in health sciences.
Application Process
- Identify a supervisor and work with the supervisor to develop the intent letter (a project proposal) and essay.
- Write the intent letter/project proposal (maximum 500 words), and an essay (maximum 500 words) on the topic How your degree in KSR is benefitting health. Have the supervisor approve the letter and essay.
- Submit application to Pirkko Markula, Associate Dean (Research), via e-mail (ksradr@ualberta.ca) by Monday, Oct. 28, 2024 at 4 p.m., including your transcript. (Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.)

Adjudication Criteria
Cumulative GPA. Particular attention will be given to grades achieved in research methods and other courses directly relevant to the proposed research (50 per cent weighting).
Intent letter. (25 per cent weighting). Note that the student's project may be part of a larger project, but the student's portion of the larger project must be viable within the timeframe of one academic term.
Essay. (25 per cent weighting). Essays will be scored based on how well they address the topic.
