Intersession Funding

The faculty will provide some support during the spring (May-June) and summer (July-August) terms through either Graduate Research Assistantship Fellowship (GRAF) or Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) appointments. Applications are sent to the faculty in the early winter term of each year. Full details of each source of funding are listed below.

GRAF

The primary purpose is to support qualified students in developing and completing their research. This type of funding is designed to allow students to concentrate on their own research while remaining on campus. As funds vary from year to year, GRAF may not always be available.

Priorities for allocation of GRAF (faculty operation-funded) are to support students who have provided satisfactory service to the faculty through previous GA assignments (e.g., teaching) and/or are at "critical" points in their programs (e.g., doctoral students preparing for candidacy).

Eligibility

  • Canadian/permanent resident students: two months during the May - August period
  • International/study permit students: three months during the May - August period
  • if you receive 12 hours/week GRA support or a full-time GRAF from your supervisor (trust-funded), you are not eligible for additional support from the faculty.
  • if you are partially funded by your supervisor, you may receive faculty support, but not in excess of two or three months as stated above.

Master's:

  • must be within the first two years of a master's program (academic year is September 1 - August 31)
  • full-time registration required over spring/summer (min. six credits/term is considered full-time registration during intersession; the FGSR automatically registers all thesis-based students in THES 906)
  • Course-based students are ineligible to receive faculty operation GRAF funding; however, students may receive GRA or GRAF funding from their supervisor or another faculty member (trust/grant funds).

Doctoral:

  • must be within the first four years of a doctoral program (academic year is September 1 - August 31)
  • full-time registration required over spring/summer (min. six credits/term is considered full-time registration during intersession; the FGSR automatically registers all thesis- based students in THES 906)

Requirements

  • A proposal for a period where financial assistance is being requested. The specifics of the work to be completed and how that work relates to the student's thesis must be clearly outlined.
  • The proposal must be completed in conjunction with the student's supervisor.
  • The student's supervisor must confirm support for the proposed work
  • Students must submit the Report of Completed Activities 30 days after the last month of the GRAF assignment.
  • Applications will not be considered if the Report of Completed Activities was not submitted the previous year.
  • Applications are assessed by the associate dean (Graduate).

ATS

Intersession teaching appointments are made through the Special Sessions unit of the Office of the Registrar. Students will be appointed as a primary instructor in a spring or summer term course; courses are offered in both terms. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable teaching experience as a primary instructor. Graduate students are given top priority when staffing intersession courses.

Eligibility

  • There are no restrictions on citizenship.
  • All graduate students in good standing may apply.
  • Students in any year of their program may apply; however, priority will be given to students in their first two years master's, and first four years doctoral program.
  • Appointments are made based primarily on demonstrated teaching skills and prior experience.
  • Cannot be combined with intersession (Spring/Summer) GRAF funding (faculty operation funding).

Requirements

  • CV demonstrating teaching skills and prior experience is required with the application.
  • To receive full Instructor funding from the Special Sessions unit of the Office of the Registrar, all courses must have a minimum enrollment of 12 students.
  • Applications are assessed by the manager, Academic Programs.
