Thesis: Save the Fish; Freeze Some Water
Introduce yourself:
I'm a second year Masters student with a passion for research and science itself.
What are you researching and what do you hope comes out of your research?
I am researching the use of ice recrystallization inhibitors in zebrafish embryos. The finding in my results can lead to successful cryopreservation of endangered fish species.
How does presenting a Three Minute Thesis (3MT) help you to explain your research to the public?
It forces me to take a really outside perspective, acknowledge my own expertise, and distill my research to its most basic components and outcomes.
What inspires you to do research?
First off, the process keeps me humble. Science is an observation of mechanisms that are already in play. It is fascinating to be able to identify these mechanisms and, better yet, apply them in ways that move the world forward.
What are three key words important to your 3MT?
Conservation biology, cryopreservation.
How does your research impact local, provincial, or global communities?
Successful cryopreservation at a local level, would offer a unique way for local research facilities to store the genetic material of their fish research organisms. At a provincial levels, less relevant to Alberta, this research can be used to facilitate aquaculture and fishing industries. Lastly, at a global scale, it can be used to conserve endangered species of marine animals.
If you had to dedicate your research to anyone from the past, present, or future, who would it be and why?
My parents first and foremost. But almost as importantly, the teachers and friends I have met along the way.
