During the FABTECH convention in Atlanta, November 6, 2018, Prof. Leijun Li and his doctoral students received two awards from the American Welding Society. Their paper (co-authored by Jason Wang, Rangasayee Kannan, and Prof. Li), Microstructural Analysis of the As-Welded Heat-Affected Zone of a Grade 91 Steel Heavy Section Weldment, was "judged the greatest contribution to the understanding of welding metallurgy published in the Welding Journal during the year 2017" for the honor of the Warren F. Savage Memorial Award.
Another paper (co-authored by P. Xu, D. Zhou, and Prof. Li), Fiber Laser Welding of WC-Co and Carbon Steel Dissimilar Materials, was selected for the McKay-Helm Award, "for the best contribution to the advancement of knowledge of low-alloy steel, stainless steel or surfacing welding metals, involving the use, development or testing of these materials, as represented by articles published in the Welding Journal during the previous calendar year."
