All Faculty of Engineering Co-op students who were in the Fort McMurray area have been reported safe. The great majority of them have returned to their homes, more are being evacuated. Some of the students are staying on with their employers, having been deemed essential.
Additionally-many students live in the Fort McMurray area may desire support. The U of A, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Government of Alberta are offering support to students, faculty, and staff members who have been affected by this tragedy.
Resources for staff and students:
- All U of A students including those on co-op placements are able to access Counselling and Clinical Services on campus for psychological support, if they desire. The office is located at SUB 2-600, (780-492-5205).
- The university has established a Disaster Relief Bursary. Find out how you can assist students affected by this tragedy.

- University of Alberta faculty, staff, and graduate students (and eligible dependents) who desire support can access Homewood Health Solutions through their Employee and Family Assistance Program and the Graduate Student Assistance Program. - Faculty and staff seeking strategies to support students in distress can connect with Rebecca Ponting, the satellite psychologist in engineering. Rebecca is in the Donadeo Innovation Centre for Engineering and can be reached via email at ponting@ualberta.ca. If she is not available, please contact the university's Central Intake at Counselling and Clinical Services (780-492-5205) and they will provide staff to support you and answer questions you may have.
