Key Lab Safety Resources
This is the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering safety resources page. Here you will find department safety policies and requirements.
There is a wealth of information & tools available to you to help you set up your lab's safety program. Please spend some time looking over the ECE, the Faculty or Engineering and EH&S websites. The flowing links will help you get started:
Supervisory EHS Professional Development Course
- ECE strongly supports the EHS viewpoint that this course should be taken by all "Principal Investigators, managers, lab coordinators, instructors, and anyone else who directs the work of others." Please ensure that the appropriate personnel in each of your labs have taken this course.
EHS Hazard Assessments Tool
- Every lab must have a hazard assessment on record and available for review by all personnel
- Hazard assessments must be updated whenever new hazards/risks are introduced
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- A hazard assessment (above) will identify the PPE required for each specific laboratory
- A PPE checklist should be posted in each laboratory
NOTE: EHS considers several items to be Basic PPE Requirements (link to EHS page above) for all university labs (including lab coats, safety glasses, gloves, closed-toe shoes, and long pants).
EHS Database (REMO system)
- This is the central database of lab spaces and associated hazards maintained by EHS. Per EHS: "All researchers who a) have been assigned a research space and b) work with hazardous materials (biological, chemical, physical, radiation) or equipment must register in the EHS database."
- It allows you to document a hazard assessment and print out appropriate signage for your lab
Laboratory planned self-inspections
- Regularly scheduled self-inspections are important for the ongoing maintenance and improvement of good safety procedures, and are considered a requirement by the Faculty of Engineering
- A planned self-inspection frequency will be assigned to your laboratory depending on the hazards present in that space, through an assessment by the Faculty of Engineering safety office.
