New 400-level Japanese Course for Winter 2013

JAPAN 460: Languages and Cultures of Okinawa Learn about Okinawan language endangerment, language policy, multilingualism, linguistic fieldwork while gaining insight into the history, politics and culture(s)/ society of Okinawa. We will closely examine one of the minority languages, Miyako, to gain a deeper understanding of these issues. Students will give reports focusing on areas such as education, religion, sports, music, dance, food, the Ryuukyuu Kingdom, and the US military presence. Click the ttitle for more information!

Assistant Professor in Korean Studies

The Department of East Asian Studies invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Korean Studies. The areas covered by the department include premodern and modern literature, cultural studies, linguistics, language pedagogy, and translation studies. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent degree (or be close to completion) in a related aspect of Korean Studies. Japanese placement test will be held in Pembina 3-58 on the following dates: Tuesday, July 10; 3:30-5:30 Friday, August 10; 1:00-3:00 Tuesday, Sept. 4; 10:00-12:00 Friday, Sept. 7; 4:00-6:00 Friday Sept. 14; 4:00 - 6:00

JAPAN 101 Registration Dates

Japan 101 A1-A6: Registration restricted to Arts students until July 2. All other students may register beginning July 3. Japan 101 A7,Q2: Registration is for first year Arts students until July 2. All Arts students may register from July 3 to July 31. All other students can register beginning August 1.

Undergraduate researcher works with faculty member on linguistic field study in Okinawa

Honoka Takei, a third year linguistics student, has been working with Dr. Ono to record and analyze lullabies in the Miyako language, a minority language in Okinawa, with funding from the Faculty of Arts and the Japan Foundation. For the full story please follow the link.

The Department of East Asian Studies is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, having been established as the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures in the fall of 1981.

Distinguished Visitor Dr. Kang-kwong Luke to appear at EAS Colloquium

The Department of East Asian Studies has invited Dr. Kang-kwong Luke from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore as Distinguished Visitor to the University of Alberta for a talk at the East Asian Studies Colloquium on March 1st. Dr. Luke's research spans the fields of Chinese linguistics, conversation analysis, cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics and sociolinguistics. We invite you to his talk on March 1st at 4:00pm in PB 358.
