Post-1991 Ukrainian Immigration to Canada: An Assessment Study

In celebration of the 130th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada and the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, CIUS is pleased to present the first discussion of research findings of CIUS's ongoing Post-1991 Research Project.

 Since the collapse of the Soviet Union and Ukraine’s declaration of independence in 1991, immigration from Ukraine to Canada has been steadily on the rise to a point that some have labeled it the "Fourth Wave". Yet, estimated to be in excess of 60,000 arrivals since 1991, the so-called “Fourth Wave” of Ukrainians in Canada has been little-understood and certainly understudied. Some small-scale qualitative and case studies have been conducted involving post-1991 Ukrainian immigrants in Canada but to date, there is no comprehensive study that tries to capture the broader economic trajectories and settlement experiences of this group over multiple years, across different immigration categories, and in different geographical and socio-cultural settings. The Post-1991 Research Project, a partnership between the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies - University of Alberta, McMaster University, and St. Thomas More College - University of Saskatchewan, aims to help fill that gap.
