Modern institutions cannot function adequately without data and data-based information. Oleh Wolowyna will describe a database on Ukrainians in the US, developed by the NTSh's Center for Demographic and Socio-Economic Research on Ukrainians in the United States, and will present several applications where the data has been used. Based on this experience, Dr. Wolowyna will present arguments in favour of compiling a similar database in Canada. Official census data in Canada is much richer than similar data in the US. It has the potential of helping to make the work of Ukrainian communities in Canada more effective, as well as providing a rich data source for innovative academic research.
Oleh Wolowyna is a fellow at the Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies, one of the oldest area studies centers at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He is also the director of the Center for Demographic and Socio-Economic Research of Ukrainians in the United States, established by the Shevchenko Scientific Society (NTSh) in New York (http://inform-decisions.com/stat/).
